Fuel Indexes

Fuel Indexes in the United States are informational databases that contain benchmarks for the most updated regional retail diesel fuel prices. Fuel Indexes are generally maintained by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) and used to calculate Fuel Surcharges.

Within the TMS, users can create custom Fuel Index schedules or Fuel Indexes related to specific customers. Create Fuel Indexes in the TMS by navigating to TMS Admin → Pricing → Fuel Indexes.

Fuel Index Setup

Create fuel Indexes for Fuel Surcharge schedule setups.

Once in the Fuel Indexes Visualforce Page (VFP), click New Fuel Index button on the left side of the view.
Enter a Name for the Fuel Index.
Enter the Data Series ID associated with the Fuel Index.
Click Save.

Retrieve the Data Series ID from the EIA to receive automatic updates on weekly retail diesel fuel charges. See the Energy Information Administration (EIA) article for more information on common Series IDs.

Fuel Index Lightning Record Page (LRP)

In addition to the General Information of the Fuel Index, there are three related lists:

Fuel Index History
- A list of historical retail diesel fuel records pulled from the EIA.
Fuel Surcharges
- A list of Fuel Surcharges associated with the Fuel Index record that includes a Fuel Index Start and Fuel Index End price range derived from the Fuel Surcharge Entry Table.
Files
- A list of files associated with the Fuel Index.

Note: In multi-currency environments, Fuel Index historical records are automatically created from the parent index of the related currency.

The TMS supports the weekly EIA indexes, which have an effective date of Monday.

Each index has at least one Fuel Index History record, which can be automatically retrieved from the EIA via the FuelIndexUpdateJob batch process. It’s recommended to run the FuelIndexUpdateJob daily at 6:00 PM, although this isn’t required.

Note: When Monday is a federal holiday, fuel rates post Wednesday morning around 10:00 a.m. (ET). The U.S. National Average retail gasoline and On-Highway diesel price in the report is always Monday prices.
